“Alternative, Trashy, Synth-Pop”

The title of this post, while may seem like an accurate description about this band, is actually far from. The 1975  is a long-standing, English band that recently released their sophomore album.

Their music was originally considered alternative or even alternative rock when they released their EP and then their self-titled album. Their following album, I love it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet unaware of it, ended up being drastically different than the sound they had already established.

Their music definitely can be considered pop, yet it doesn’t read across as the pop that is heard on radio stations. You’ll hear their music on an alternative radio channel, but rarely something that continually plays top 40 or top 40-esque songs. And that is because, while their sound is a mix of alternative and synth-pop, as some would classify it, their lyrics are critical of how society operates, their music videos often reflecting that.

Their sound is refreshing. It is lively, but it will comfort you even when you are at your worst. That can be said for every single song off their sophomore and debut album. Not only do their lyrics come across so boldly, their music compliments that. Every single song on this album makes some sort of impact. It is meant to shock, to wow, to illicit emotion that didn’t seem to exist. And each song delivers.

Their music is beyond worthy of spending hours and hours just immersing yourself in. More so, the band itself is as well.

The aesthetic their band holds is beyond exciting. They bring their music alive with a visual aspect, making sure their image is specific and so undeniably theirs. The art of the album, from the neon lights to the pale pink billboard signs on the way to Coachella, are all directed by the magnificent Samuel Burgess-Johnson.

Their sound and look come together so seamlessly, but the band holds more appeal than just that. Their lead singer, Matty (not Matt!) Healy, is the face of this bandom, providing a very concrete individual to focus on when it comes to the band. He’s answered almost every question in the book an interviewer can think of, causing juxtaposition and easter eggs to be his identifying commentary when speaking of his music. Nevertheless, he is someone who is so genuine that it is often surprising to see him in the music industry. He lives for his art, much like George Daniel, Adam Hann, and Ross MacDonald, that it is truly refreshing.

Each aspect of The 1975 makes you love the band a little bit more. It is no wonder they have taken the U.K. by storm and have had the U.S. follow steadily in those footsteps.

Even though their sophomore album just came out, along with a myriad of interviews, and two new music videos just came out, we are always craving for more of their music. Hopefully, Matty reveals or tries out some new sounds while on stage for their tour this year!
